Angels Don’t All Wear Wings

Written for Gill to sing – the recording here is just me getting the song “out there”. Once Gill’s got her head around it, I’ll record her voice and take mine out of the mix. Might double-track her a bit on the chorus. Gill loves angels (see below) and I think we’re all a bit coy about them. We all accept nurses as “angels” and probably loving parents as “angels”. Would we accept the accusation of being an angel though? Here’s a cheesy old joke that nakes the same point, but first …

Here’s an mp3 of me singing it

Here is the music

Now the silly joke …. A man was drowning in a flood. He was praying to God for help. A man in a rowing boat came by and the rower shouted, “Jump in”  The drowning man shouted back, “No, it’s OK, I’m praying to God and he is going to save me.” So the rowing boat went on.

Then a motorboat came by. “The pilot of the motorboat shouted, “Jump in.” The drowning man said again, “No thanks, I’m praying to God and he is going to save me. I have faith.” So the motorboat went on.

Then a helicopter came by and the pilot shouted down, “Grab this rope and I’ll lift you to safety.” The drowning man again replied, “No thanks, I’m praying to God and he is going to save me. I have faith.” So the helicopter also flew away.

The man drowned.

He went to Heaven and finally got his chance to grumble to God, “I had faith in you but you didn’ae save me, you let me droon. That wisnae fair”

God replied, “Look, ye big numpty. I sent you a bloody rowing boat, a motorboat and a helicopter, what were you waiting for?  Punters wi’ wings?”.

Angels Don’t All Wear Wings

For my Gill to sing … she loves her angels (real and Lladro) … also for her lovely Mum, Isabel. I think they’ll recognise one another in verse 2 and Gill should have burning ears during verse 3!

Your angel may be flying round your head.
Or checking on the blanket on your bed.
She may be sending you to sleep to make you well.
He may come running when you ring the nurse’s bell.
God sends angels that you may not recognise.
Their feet are on the ground, not in the skies.

Was she flying on clouds or driving a car?
Was he playing a harp or a Fender guitar?
Did she follow the moonshine, or the sunrise?
Wearing a halo or blue Levis?
On stained glass window or Christmas tree?
They’re all angels but it seems to me
that angels don’t all wear wings.

Your angel may be dressed in white and gold.
Or holding you to keep you from the cold.
She may be wiping your small knees each time you fall.
He may be throwing you a Frisbee or a ball.
God sends angels that you may not recognise.
Their feet are on the ground, not in the skies.

Your angel may be circling in the sky.
Or kissing back your sad tears when you cry.
She may be in your arms and in your bed.
He may be making sweet dreams in your head.
God sends angels that you may not recognise.
Their feet are on the ground, not in the skies.

Your angels may be … by Caravaggio.
Or carved in stone … by Michelangelo.
. They may be right beside you every day.
Or only when you find the time to pray.
God sends angels that you may not recognise.
Their feet are on the ground, not in the skies.
