Loake Patent … in patent leather, funnily enough!

At the opposite extreme from suede – the least hairy leather available is Patent Leather. Shown on the Loake Patent shown, it is actually quite unusual in men’s shoes. Patent leather is effectively an extreme version of corrected leather, where the shiny coating is actually “japanned“. Japanning is a heavy black lacquer, almost like enamel paint. Modern patent leather usually has a plastic coating. As a result, the shine is spectacular and the look is appropriate to tuxedos and dinner jackets, not jeans and chinos!
