A Commando sole is, as the name suggests, a rubber sole with studs or other raised areas to increase grip in slippery conditions. There’s a good example on the Loake Epsom to the left. It can be used in both welted and cemented shoes and offers a robust, waterproof sole. Rubber does not, however, breathe like leather. Dainite is a studded sole unit made by the Harboro Rubber Company Ltd in Market Harborough. As shown on the right on a Loake Sovereign, it can be made slightly less chunky and therefore smart as well as practical.
