I’m cheating slightly here, as Loake don’t currently make a wholecut … a shoe whose upper is a single piece of leather. It therefore has to be an Oxford (think about it) and the elegant Loake Knightsbridge on the left comes close. Clearly, a real wholecut is a challenging shoe to make, as a single, flat piece of leather has to become seriously three-dimensional, and lasting the shoe is an even-trickier-than-usual business. My own view is that a true wholecut (see right – not a Loake!) is a funny-looking thing and that the Knightsbridge is far more elegant, with its single sweeping seam linking quarter and vamp
