Monk Shoe – Loake Cannon

Loake Islington

Loake Islington

The monk shoe is a pretty smart fellow – replacing the laces with a strap or two – rather like those on a monk’s sandal … hence the name. That aside, they may be plain-fronted like the Loake Islington on the left or toecapped like the double-monk Loake Cannon on the right. In principle, they could be brogued and even be a Spectator shoe … although I’ve never seen a Spectating Monk in real life. Despite being viewed normally as a smart shoe, the monk actually works well with jeans, where the buckle looks more chunky, acts more macho and assumes a less ecclesiastical persona!
