Candle in the Night

Another year, another song … they’re happening almost weekly right now. I was listening to quite a lot of my longest-standing musical hero, Tom Paxton, in December … and this happened. It’s for Gill, obviously – who will become Mrs Murray in May, come hell, high water, plagues of locusts, boils, frogs and/or COVID. She is my light and my demons have no chance when she turns on them.

Here is the mp3

Here is the sheet music

And here are the words

When the first light of the morning falls on me, there you are, there you are.
The only place I ever want to be is where you are, where you are.
I listen to you breathing soft and low. My heart will be with you everywhere you go.

You are my candle in the night, my demons die before your light.
Wounds – you seal, heart- you heal, dreams – you mend.
You pulled me from the pyre. You set my soul on fire. You are my heart’s desire. You’re my best friend.

When you go away and sadness falls on me, there you are, there you are.
The only place I ever want to be is where you are, where you are.
You’re with me every moment of the day. Everywhere and all the time and all the way.

When the sun sets and the moon shines on the sea, there you are, there you are.
The only place I ever want to be is where you are, where you are.
And thoughts of loving you fill my head. In my heart and in my soul and in my bed.

In the darkness, when my dreaming sets me free. There you are. There you are.
The only place I ever want to be is where you are, where you are.
I want you every step along the way. I want you every night and every day.
